Our Church

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

 John 3:16

On the 5th November 1910 the foundation stone for St Alban The Martyr was laid by the Duke of Portland of Welbeck Abbey.

The Church was dedicated on the 2nd July 1911 by the Bishop of Southwell. The church is built of Bulwell stone with Weldon stone dressings

In 1937 extension work was carried out and an additional North Aisle was built.

On the 16th July 1968 a large portion of  the church was damaged by fire.

After extensive repairs and refurbishment

the Church was re-hallowed on the 20th May 1969.

The main feature of the Church is, without doubt, the imposing Altar window. It was installed in 1995 and referred to as the East Window. It was dedicated by the, Right Rev. Patrick Harris Bishop of Southwell on 25th June 1995.

The design shows Christ,  his arms outstretched, as both the Giver and the Receiver. As you face the window, on the left of Jesus is the Greek letter Alpha (the beginning) and on the right the Greek letter Omega (the end). Behind Christ is the Tree of Life and at his feet the River of Life. The window needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Why not call in any Tuesday between 2.15pm - 3.15pm or Saturday 10.30am - noon, when the Church is open for visitors, quiet reflection or prayer.
